Rob — How much money have you won in Fantasy Football Leagues?
In the 24 years I’ve been addicted, I have won zero money playing fantasy football. The handful of times I played for money, I didn’t do well.
But I have won something far, far more valuable… the P3 Heisman.

We’ve only got one data source at the moment, and that’s for QB. We might be calling for volunteers to help with the effort at some point though… 🙂

Rob, if you start doing additional work for WR/RB/TE/DEF, I’d be willing to take a stab at volunteering. I’m somewhere in the amateur/intermediate range of Power BI knowledge, and feel like this would be a great challenge to take my skills to the next level…while also perhaps helping me dominate my league. I mean, duh.
All of this serves as a tremendous inspiration to me and where I want to take CFL data visualization. (I’d be remiss in saying it’s not slightly intimidating, too!) Keep up the great work!!
Rob: This is a really cool solution. As a training exercise, how do we look under the hood so see the table structure and the code or is that a state secret?
Well the PBIX file itself IS a state secret, but one of the reasons we’re doing this is to give us things to blog about.
So for instance, the new “Matchup Evaluator” that went live today… as simple as it looks there were a couple of intermediate-level wrinkles in making it work.

I love the use of bar charts in a table visual as displayed in the second and third sheet.
How would you have dealt with value ranges that are less tightly bound between a fixed 0 and 100% or x and x+y yards? For instance, fat tailed data points between 1$ and $5,000,000?
Well I *could* set the data bar threshold to be fixed values to deal with outliers, rather than “max and min values” that are the default.
Or I could do some fanciness in my measure and turn each measure into, say, a percentile.
A few different ways to attack it, but they all share the same property: the outliers will look very similar to the “normal” max/min values.
This is an outstanding dashboard. Visually appealing and easy to navigate. I’m probably just missing it, but is there a way to clear all filters at once?

The two things I’d love to see come from two different NFL-related passions; as a Madden player, it’d be great to try and categorise the defensive plays further than simple blitz/no blitz (is that simply 5 man rush+ is a blitz?) to include man/zone/hybrids – I’m assuming that could well be a limitation of the data source, though. And as a fantasy player, it’d be cool to see how this looks as all QBs vs teams, to try and identify which kinds of QBs can be successful week to week.
Glad u like it! You’re correct – we don’t have the data on man/zone/hybrid, but we DO have number of blitzers, and we ARE calling it a blitz on 5+
We simplified it because we figured no one would care at that level of detail. We were wrong 🙂

Try Pro Football Reference. All of our player data came from them, but we were less concerned about licensing than you should be.
The problem with the NFL is that the players have asserted rights (I think) over their likenesses for commercial purposes. I suspect your boardgame would need to pay some handsome royalties in order to be legal. Which sucks.

This looks great. I just stumbled across this article and recently the power of Power BI and what can be done. I am a hard one recreational DFS player on Fanduel and thought about building my own models using power BI to Sort and build models.Im done with paying subscriptions. Do you have any recommendations to learn or insight on how to get started. I recently picked up M is for Data Monkey. Then I was going to work on Power BI.
