When the Matrix option “switch values to row groups rather than columns” is selected, and export to excel (data with current layout), the resultant excel layout is inconsistent with the original matrix layout.
Is there a way of preventing this?

It was not my intention to cover the live connection in this particular blog so I have changed the image that was displayed to prevent misunderstandings by someone less versed in Power BI. I will address the live connection export in an upcoming blog. thank you very much for letting me know I had that displayed.

The Summarized data option you show is the “live connection (500,000 row max).” This is a recent feature, which is not actually a download but a live connection. After downloading, the exporter needs to enable the connection so that it can query the data (perhaps wait for Microsoft Defender to review; Enable Editing; Enable Content; wait as background query runs). When introduced, it confused some end users who thought that the export file was empty. Users should also check to see if their results are exactly 500,000, which most likely indicates that the results are truncated.

Live export is very fast because it only generates an Excel file with the connection. Since it’s a live connection, people can refresh the file to get the latest information without re-downloading. You can also build a pivot table off the table generated by the query, which will also have the live connection.

The other .xlsx option is a traditional download with 150,000 row max.
